Implants

Q.  What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that is placed into an area where the root a tooth used to be.  The implant acts like the root of a tooth or an anchor, and once healed, can have a crown bonded to it to replace a missing tooth. Unlike other replacement solutions, implants are not meant to be removable, and function and look very similar to your natural teeth.

Q.  Who is a candidate for dental implants and how successful are implants?

Many people with missing teeth are candidates for for implants.  One notable exception is smokers, as there is a higher risk of initial implant failure due to the nicotine's action on blood vessels.  There are many factors which your general dentist at Millennium Smile - Crowfoot Dental will look at to determine if implants are right for you. Today we use implants to replace small bridges, removable partial dentures and missing teeth.

The potential for success depends largely on quality of the bone where the implants are placed and the amount of force that they are put under. Generally, with proper care, once properly healed, implants last for many years.

Q.  Why have dental implants become so popular?

Implant tooth replacement has become necessary to increase overall health and comfort in a population that is extending its lifespan. Implants can provide people with highly stable dental replacements that are both functional and attractive.

Many types of implants do not rely on adjacent teeth for their support, which can reduce the amount of stress the rest of your dentition is put under.  This is very important for people who suffer from gum disease, as implants may be the only good option, as the remaining teeth are not strong enough to support removable dentures or fixed bridges.
